Confronting Reality

SCARED STIFF is an official AMB partner program delivered as part of the Midnight Basketball League Program™ — AMB's comprehensive crime prevention, education, employment, and recreational initiative. SCARED STIFF contributes specifically to the Health Component, using direct and honest methods to show young people the real consequences of gun violence and criminal activity through lived experience, survivor testimonials, and community-based education.

The Midnight Basketball League Program™ itself is AMB's core violence prevention model. SCARED STIFF strengthens that mission by creating a genuine emotional response — making youth pause, reflect, and choose a different path. It is about truth-telling, delivered inside the safe structure the MBL Program provides.

Pilot Program SCARED STIFF Partnership Gun Violence Prevention Faith Community

Guns to Gardens Tarrant County & Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas

The No Shots Fired / Caskets of Compassion initiative — led by Pastor Kyev Tatum of New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth — is an official pilot partner for SCARED STIFF programming. This faith-based community violence intervention effort perfectly embodies the SCARED STIFF mission: confronting the real consequences of gun violence with truth, compassion, and community action.

The partnership kicked off on October 1, 2026 with the Guns to Gardens Blessing of the Chop Saw and Caskets of Compassion ceremony — a powerful memorial where clergy read the name of each Tarrant County resident who died from gun homicide or suicide in the past year, placing a card with their name in a casket. The event highlighted that firearm suicides claim more lives than firearm homicides in the county each year.

More than 35 guns were collected at the inaugural event and transformed into garden tools for community use. A garden was planted in memory of Morningside teen Trevell "Tre" Boyer, killed by gun violence — now a thriving food forest in ZIP code 76104, serving a community facing significant food insecurity and poverty.

"Where is the compassion? Where are the investments in prevention, and where are our leaders? This is not about politics. This is about compassion and mercy for people who are suffering from mental trauma and the pain of loss."
